{"id":1156,"date":"2026-07-08T16:06:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T14:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bryomolecules.eu\/?p=1156"},"modified":"2026-07-08T16:06:34","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T14:06:34","slug":"addressing-the-key-challenges-for-bryomolecules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bryomolecules.eu\/index.php\/2026\/07\/08\/addressing-the-key-challenges-for-bryomolecules\/","title":{"rendered":"Addressing the Key\u00a0Challenges\u00a0for BRYOMOLECULES\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Addressing the Key&nbsp;Challenges&nbsp;for BRYOMOLECULES<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-48bcd05c\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bryophytes&nbsp;represent&nbsp;a promising source of natural bioactive compounds (BACs) for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.&nbsp;However, several barriers must be addressed to&nbsp;discover&nbsp;their full potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-buttons uagb-buttons__outer-wrap uagb-btn__default-btn uagb-btn-tablet__default-btn uagb-btn-mobile__default-btn uagb-block-59aa4d7e\"><div class=\"uagb-buttons__wrap uagb-buttons-layout-wrap \">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-buttons-child uagb-buttons__outer-wrap uagb-block-5dc301c8 wp-block-button\"><div class=\"uagb-button__wrapper\"><a class=\"uagb-buttons-repeater wp-block-button__link\" aria-label=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bryomolecules.eu\/index.php\/unlocking-the-potential-of-bryophytes\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"button\"><div class=\"uagb-button__link\">Learn more about bryophytes<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand these&nbsp;challenges, we&nbsp;interviewed Elisa Morganti, European&nbsp;Programme&nbsp;Manager at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trentinoinnovation.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hub Innovazione Trentino (HIT)<\/a>.&nbsp;During our conversation, she highlighted&nbsp;four&nbsp;key&nbsp;areas&nbsp;that the BRYOMOLECULES project is addressing:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Limited sustainable availability:<\/strong>\u00a0Bryophytes\u00a0have\u00a0a\u00a0largely untapped\u00a0BAC richness,\u00a0partially due to\u00a0generally slow\u00a0growth and biomass production.\u00a0To overcome such constraints in the acquisition of BACs of interest, BRYOMOLECULES will take two major\u00a0approaches:\u00a0 (1)\u00a0attempting\u00a0novel axenic-based cultivation systems of the most relevant native bryophyte species, and\u00a0(2) engineering of homologous host systems (fast-growing, model bryophytes or angiosperms, and other model\u00a0organisms like yeast and bacteria)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strict legislation:<\/strong>\u00a0The development of new active ingredients from bryophytes must\u00a0comply with\u00a0regulations\u00a0governing access\u00a0to genetic resources and benefit sharing (ABS), such\u00a0as the\u00a0Nagoya Protocol.\u00a0These regulations\u00a0may\u00a0vary by country and cover both research and industrial applications. While BRYOMOLECULES does not\u00a0anticipate\u00a0commercial applications during\u00a0the\u00a0project implementation timeline, all bryophyte sampling is\u00a0conducted in full compliance with ABS-related requirements. Cosmetic ingredient development will also\u00a0comply with\u00a0Regulation (EC) No 1223\/2009 on cosmetic products.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Complexity of\u00a0bryophytes&#8217;\u00a0biological processes involved in\u00a0the\u00a0natural\u00a0BACs production<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Consumer\u00a0attitude:<\/strong>\u00a0Many people have limited knowledge of GMOs and often rely on internet and media sources, where information can be inaccurate or misleading. Bryophytes are also\u00a0frequently\u00a0perceived as lawn weeds rather than organisms with remarkable physical and chemical diversity and important ecological roles. To improve acceptance of bryophyte-derived BACs,\u00a0transparent communication on sourcing, production processes, efficacy, and safety will be essential.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Interview with Elisa Morganti - Key challenges for BRYOMOLECULES\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cq9Tp0gkLBI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the barriers discussed during the interview, BRYOMOLECULES is also addressing another important challenge:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cost-effectiveness:<\/strong>\u00a0Producing natural bioactive compounds\u00a0through conventional chemical industrial processes\u00a0can be expensive, particularly amid\u00a0rising energy costs and supply chain challenges. To improve sustainability and reduce costs, BRYOMOLECULES\u00a0focuses\u00a0on\u00a0optimising\u00a0cultivation, harvesting, and BAC extraction methods,\u00a0\u00a0on\u00a0waste reduction and\u00a0utilisation,\u00a0economies of scale\u00a0and market diversification. A lab-scaled Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) will also\u00a0be conducted to\u00a0help\u00a0identify\u00a0opportunities to enhance efficiency and sustainability.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overcoming&nbsp;these legislative, societal, and economic barriers will be crucial for supporting the future development of innovative and sustainable bryophyte-derived bioactive compounds and bringing their benefits closer to consumers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bryophytes represent a promising source of natural bioactive compounds (BACs) for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.
