BRYOMOLECULES

Bioprospecting and Production of Bioactive Molecules from European Bryophytes, is an innovative initiative dedicated to unlocking the potential of Europe’s overlooked mosses and liverworts. These small plants are rich in biologically active compounds (BACs) with immense potential in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

The Project

BRYOMOLECULES aims to conduct the first large-scale, systematic search for bio active compounds, focusing exclusively on European bryophyte species. By establishing sterile, axenic cultures and identifying the biosynthetic pathways of bryophytes compounds, the project seeks to overcome the challenges of low natural growth rates and the difficulties in large-scale extraction., while enhancing the conservation of European bryophyte biodiversity.

The goal is to create sustainable, bio-based production methods for BACs, minimizing environmental impact and reducing reliance on wild harvesting. The project will also contribute to the development of new, eco-friendly products through research and collaboration.

BRYOMOLECULES is set to advance scientific knowledge and industrial applications, leading to future innovations in the bioeconomy.

To ensure the strongest impact, the BRYOMOLECULES consortium is committed to achieving five key outcomes. These outcomes will guide the research and innovation efforts, ensuring that the scientific discoveries and industrial applications are not only groundbreaking but also sustainable and scalable. By focusing on these targeted goals, the consortium aims to maximize the project’s contributions to both the scientific community and industry, while fostering long-term benefits for biodiversity conservation and eco-friendly biotechnological processes.

Enhanced Knowledge of European Biodiversity

The project will deepen the understanding of European bryophyte species, providing chemo- and molecular taxonomies and establishing new genetic and chemical resources that can support future biodiversity research.

Discovery of Novel Bioactive Compounds

Through large-scale bioprospecting, the project aims to identify and develop new, eco-friendly bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, ensuring sustainable and effective alternatives.

Sustainable Production Methods

BRYOMOLECULES will establish new methods for cultivating bryophytes and engineering metabolic pathways, reducing pressure on wild populations and creating scalable production systems.

Increased Public-Private Collaboration

By integrating academic and industrial partners, the project will foster cooperation between public and private sectors, enhancing the competitiveness of European biotechnology industries.

Raising Public Awareness

The project will promote the importance of bryophyte biodiversity and biotechnology through public outreach, educational workshops, and open access to its data and findings.
