Unlocking the Potential of Bryophytes: BRYOMOLECULES documentary released
We are excited to announce the release of the BRYOMOLECULES documentary, “Unlocking the Potential of Bryophytes”. This 10-minute film explores bryophytes, mosses and liverworts, their benefits for biotechnology-based sustainable innovations in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, as well as the collaborative effort required to bring their potential closer to market.
Throughout the video, we also introduce viewers to these ancient species and their uniqueness compared to other plants. Bryophytes, although small and often overlooked, hold a remarkable promise for the bioeconomy sector. By combining advanced cultivation techniques with modern biotechnology, BRYOMOLECULES is laying the groundwork for turning research into a tangible contribution to sustainable European industries.

The journey behind the documentary
Over the past months, our communication team travelled across Europe to meet our partners, explore their expertise, and capture the work taking place in the labs and in the field:
- In Sweden, we interviewed our partners at Lund University, where the focus was on highlighting the cultivation of bryophytes under controlled conditions and their growth in axenic cultures. These methods are crucial for producing enough material for further research while preserving biodiversity.
- In Valencia, Spain, the team visited our partners at Bionos Biotech, experts on the biochemical analysis of bryophytes for the identification of metabolites biosynthetic pathways, who gave insights on methods for scaling up such biosynthetic processes for the production of unique natural compounds with potential industrial application.
A story about union across disciplines
The making of this documentary has been a valuable learning process; by engaging with partners and documenting their expertise, it created a story about union across disciplines, innovation, and a shared commitment to shaping the future of bio-based solutions in Europe.
